Is Halsted Financial Services a scam?

Hey everyone,

So, I’ve been getting emails from this company called “Halsted Financial Services” saying I owe them $1,737.85, but I don’t remember owing anyone that much money. They say it’s from Credit One Bank, but I’ve never heard of them, and I’ve never lived or banked in Nevada, where they’re based. They also claim I made a payment to them last year, but I didn’t.

These emails are ending up in my spam folder, along with other sketchy stuff like fake Norton or McAfee bills and a letter about some inheritance. Plus, there’s an “unsubscribe” link, which seems odd for a collections email.

I’m thinking this might be a scam, especially since they haven’t sent anything by mail or called me. They only seem to know my email and name, which is part of my email address. I’m tempted to just ignore them, but the idea of collections is worrying me.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a scam or legit? Any advice on what to do next would be really helpful. Thanks!

Legitimate financial services providers usually provide accessible contact information, including phone numbers, email addresses, and physical addresses. But I have been looking for theirs i have not seen them.

Are the email addresses being sent legitimate? Do they appear to be authentic business emails, exactly?

I think this sounds like phishing. They will phone or mail you if they are sincere in their belief that you owe them money.

To be safe, obtain your credit reports from the major agencies and verify that no one has created an account in your name. However, this sounds like a fraud thus far.

@Ella Yes, I agree that it sounds like phishing. Without the recipient’s address or phone number, no one would lend money. Furthermore, I would think they would send a real letter rather than merely an email that could—and often did—end up in spam, where it is overlooked. I recently checked my credit report as advised by justLouis, and I found no evidence of Credit One or any other indication that I have fallen behind on or missed any payments.
