How long does it take for an echeck to clear?

I recently made an online purchase with an eCheck and was surprised by how long it took to process. Does anyone know why this might be the case?

Paying with an eCheck may feel slower than using a credit card. That’s because eChecks use a unique network called ACH to transfer funds between banks. This network processes items in groups, which takes more time. Also, both banks must double-check everything before sending the funds. Even though it may appear slow, eChecks are faster than conventional checks, which can take decades to clear!

An eCheck typically takes 3-5 business days to clear, though this can vary depending on the financial institutions involved.

Most eChecks have a 24-hour expiration date since they depend on banking institutions to handle the transaction. Three to five business days after your transaction is approved, your payment will be processed. Your payment may clear as early as Thursday, for instance, if you make it on Monday.
