How can I keep my money private from my parents?

Hey guys,

I just got my first job, and my dad set up my bank account with both our names on it. He assured me we wouldn’t be spending the same money, but now I regret it. He harasses me about my purchases, like when I spent $20 on plastic cups for a school event. Now he wants to take 40% of my salary. Can I do anything? I live in Canada and have an account with BMO Bank.

Hey…Consider using a separate bank account or financial institution. Avoid discussing financial details with your parents, and manage your funds discreetly through secure online platforms or digital wallets.

Hey! You can open a new bank account in your name only. Visit BMO Bank with your ID and explain your situation. Transfer your funds to the new account and redirect your salary deposits there. Consider seeking advice from a trusted adult or financial advisor for further assistance.

Visit your bank and schedule a time to speak with a representative for new accounts. All of your inquiries are welcome, and they ought to be pleased to respond. Building a rapport with your lenders is another excellent option. It’s a positive sign if, at the age of 17, you are doubting these things.
