Anyone know if i can put cash in my kid’s account?

does anyone know if i can still do this? (i’ll check with the bank later when they open)

thinking of putting some cash in my daughter’s account – she’s with CIBC, i’m not – and a few years back, i could just go into a CIBC branch with her account and transit number along with her name, and the teller would let me deposit cash for her. wondering if this is still doable?

she’s at work until tonight, and since her birthday’s tomorrow, i thought it’d be a nice surprise (it’ll be under $1000 if that matters)

thanks in advance!

yup, if you have her account info, you can still make a deposit.

just a heads up, they might ask you for ID.

why not just e-transfer the money?

i wanted to do it as a surprise so she’ll see it after work. maybe i’m old-school, but i like doing it this way – did it once before, and she was so happy! i’m probably one of those folks who still give their kids/grandkids a birthday card with a cheque inside (if i remember to grab cash).

@Cam
that’s super thoughtful of you!

thanks, it’s nice to do little things like that for them – especially when they’re independent and responsible. makes us feel good as parents too :slight_smile:

@Cam
you could still surprise her with an e-transfer and a nice message. she’ll be just as happy!

oh, i’m sure that works too! i just haven’t really used e-transfer much. last time i did was for a playstation on kijiji – the seller insisted on it.

if she has auto-deposit, it’d show up right away. still a fun surprise!

@Cam
yeah, cheques were a hassle for a while, but now you can just deposit them by taking a picture on the banking app. makes it so much easier!

you should be fine doing this.

you can still do a third-party deposit at the branch.

you can deposit into anyone’s account – feel free to use mine too haha

just e-transfer the money? edit: you could e-transfer it to her phone number and add a birthday message.

after some issues with money laundering in the US, there’s been some policy changes creeping into Canadian banks. some banks stopped third-party deposits. i don’t know if CIBC has done this yet, but if it’s under $1000, you’re good with an e-transfer.

you can do it, but she’ll probably get a notification in her app about the deposit. if it were me, i’d be calling the bank to see what’s going on! e-transfers might be less of a hassle.

yup, they’ll probably ask for some ID.
