Why can't I get collision and comprehensive on a 2018 car?

Hey everyone,

I just moved from Europe to Texas and I’m in the process of buying my first car in the US.

While running insurance quotes with Progressive and GEICO (since they allow foreign licenses), I noticed something odd. When I used 2018 or older cars in my quotes, comprehensive and collision coverage weren’t even an option.

Is this normal? Or is it because I’m considered a high-risk driver since I have no US driving history?

I was looking at buying a 2018 Mazda 3 for around $16,000, paying in full with cash. But the idea of getting into an accident, being at fault, and losing everything is stressing me out.

Would appreciate any insights. Thanks!

You should reach out to an insurance broker or agent. You can definitely get the coverage you’re looking for.

Try calling the insurance companies directly or work with an independent agent. Online quotes can be limited, especially for older cars. Some insurers may just want extra details like pictures to confirm the car is in good condition before offering coverage.

Check with a local State Farm office. They can insure you even without a US driver’s license, and you can usually add comprehensive and collision to almost any car.

Plenty of people have comp and collision on cars older than 2018. Sounds like an issue with your online quote. Talk to an independent broker who can look at multiple options for you.

Try adding comprehensive first and then collision. Some insurers require comp before they’ll let you add collision.
