Hey Everyone,
I’m looking for apartments in NYC and have been talking to some people on Facebook about it. One person gave me a link to “CheckFreeScore” for checking my credit score, saying it’s the only site they use for their property. This made me suspicious because the person who posted the ad asked me to email a different account, supposedly the ‘property owner.’ I emailed them with some questions about the apartment, but they only sent back generic info similar to the ad.
The ‘property owner’ insisted that they can only use this particular credit score site and no others. I checked reviews on TrustPilot, and people say they get charged $39.95 and that canceling is difficult. Do you think this is a scam? Please let me know what you think.

I’m really relieved that I stumbled upon this thread because I’m currently in the process of applying for a remote data entry job. They specifically requested that I include a screenshot of a report from that site. I had a personal issue with the link in the application. It appeared to be flagged as malware on my PC, preventing me from accessing it.

I’m happy this thread was of use to you. Given that the URL was reported as malicious, this is quite worrying. Being cautious is definitely worthwhile. To find out more about the requirements and make sure the link is secure, you might wish to get in touch with the business directly. Precaution is preferable to regret!

Regarding its validity, reviews for CheckFreeScore.com are not entirely consistent. According to some reports, it is a legitimate service that provides tools for monitoring and verifying credit scores. On the other hand, a lot of customer evaluations mention unapproved charges and trouble getting refunds, which could indicate problems with billing procedures. Prior to registering, it is advised that you use caution and carefully read the terms and conditions (Fiscal Tiger).
Yes, they are not legitimate. Scammers frequently post false rental advertising or bogus employment, telling you that you must sign up via their link to this credit checking site. They do this to earn the commission they receive when customers sign up.

Thanks for the warning, Lucypiper! It’s important to be cautious of rental ads or job offers that require signing up through a specific link for credit checks. Scammers often use these tactics to earn commissions. Always verify the legitimacy of such offers before proceeding.
100% SCAM. The property’s “owner” is a bot. When I realized what was going on, I texted “Mark William” and told him he must be phishing. Point blank.
As someone actively searching for an apartment in NYC, I recently encountered a situation that raised red flags. A person on Facebook directed me to “CheckFreeScore” to check my credit, claiming it’s the only site they use. This seemed odd, especially since the ad poster asked me to email a different account, allegedly the ‘property owner,’ who responded with generic info. They insisted on using this specific credit score site, which has negative reviews on TrustPilot about hidden charges and difficulty canceling. Given these suspicious elements, I believe this could be a scam and advise caution.
